The focus on IoT in the arable food chain – and the worries around its use

Posted by Clive Longbottom on Apr 4, 2017 1:10:00 PM

The arable food chain, consisting of farms, logistics/warehousing, food processing and retail, is a complex one with a major focus on food hygiene and pest management. In research carried out by Quocirca for Rentokil Initial in late 2016, the views of those responsible for managing these areas were found related to where the internet of things (IoT), cloud computing and big data could help them.

Impact Of The IoT: From Farm To Fork

Posted by Clive Longbottom on Mar 13, 2017 10:19:10 AM

The Internet of Things (IoT) is poised to have a major impact on the food supply chain – all the way from the farm to the individual buying food from a retail outlet.  Based on research carried out in late 2016, this report looks at the various areas where the IoT will enable the food supply chain to gain the maximum benefits.

Raspberry Pi Zero W – $10 Citrix endpoint, maybe

Posted by Nic Burkinshaw on Mar 2, 2017 12:19:27 PM

I received an email from The PiHut on Tuesday, ordered a Raspberry Pi Zero W and case. It arrived two days later – the case, for £6, is impressive; 1 base and 3 lids – one plain, one for camera and one for GPIO access. Note that the case also came with the short ribbon cable required to connect the standard Raspberry Pi camera.

Collaboration – Where AV And IT Meet?

Posted by Rob Bamforth on Mar 2, 2017 9:38:02 AM

There were plenty of amazing products launched and on display at ISE2017 in Amsterdam in early February. But in the background buzz there was a common theme of an industry in transition. While many talked about convergence between AV and IT, some fear the risk that it will actually be more of a ‘collision’. This will have a consequential impact on jobs and revenues.

The year is 1750 – just before the industrial revolution. The overall population of the UK is around 6.5m. London has a population of 675,000: the second most populated city is the sea port of Bristol, with 45,000.

No silver bullet for business IoT security

Posted by Bob Tarzey on Jan 27, 2017 12:25:45 PM

The internet of things (IoT) has much potential to streamline business processes and provide new ways to interact with customers. But it also opens new frontiers for cyber criminals and hacktivists to exploit.

Quocirca published reports in 2015 (The many guises of the IoT)  and 2016 (European perceptions, preparedness and strategies for IoT security) that look at the interplay between IoT opportunities and threats. Some of the findings from these reports are highlighted in this buyer’s guide, which looks at how to secure the IoT in your organisation.

The Internet of Everything – the need to manage external things

Posted by Bob Tarzey on Dec 16, 2016 9:45:09 AM

Research commissioned by Quocirca in July 2016, as background to its Reference Architecture for the IoE (Internet of Everything), shows that most businesses in the UK and Germany believe the Internet of Things (IoT) is already having a major impact (43%) or expect that it will do so soon (44%). The remaining 13% are more sceptical, down from 18% in another survey, with a similar demographic, conducted by Quocirca in 2015 (The many guises of the IoT, sponsored by Neustar, a supplier of market intelligence,  web performance and internet security services).

Why consumers need to care about the IoT

Posted by Clive Longbottom on Nov 10, 2016 1:33:00 PM

The recent global distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks against large chunks of the global internet used consumer IP cams as a part of the bot net that generated the network traffic. The massive growth in the use of cameras for home security, nature watching and so on means that there are millions of such devices attached to home networks, creating part of the ‘consumer’ internet of things (IoT). These are generally far from being dumb devices, however – the majority come with a version of Linux as an operating system. Anyone getting access to that base operating system can do a lot with such devices.

The shape of things to come – advanced networking security for the IoT

Posted by Bob Tarzey on Oct 24, 2016 10:39:40 AM

There is all sort of potential for IoT-related (Internet of Things) applications to streamline business processes and provide new ways of interacting with customers. This was recognised by a cross section of industry sectors surveyed in a new Quocirca report that covered the UK and German speaking region (European Perceptions, Preparedness and Strategies for IoT Security, Oct 2016). 68% said the IoT was already having an impact or would do soon.
