Windows Search is a feature that has existed in the Windows OS since Windows Vista, although it did exist as freeware called Windows Desktop Search for XP and Server 2003. It replaced the Indexing Service that first arrived as part of the Windows NT4 Option Pack, which was deprecated in Windows 7 and finally removed in Windows 8.

Windows Search builds a full-text index of files on a device. The time required for the initial creation of this index depends on the amount and type of data to be indexed and can take up to several hours. In persistent environments, this does not present a problem, as the creation of the index is a one-time event. However, in non-persistent RDSH or VDI environments like XenApp and XenDesktop, this can present an issue.

Citrix Director: What is it Good For?

Posted by Rory Monaghan on May 8, 2018 9:51:34 AM

Recently at the Citrix Masters Retreat,  I attended a session oddly named Citrix Sucks.

A lot was discussed, it was a pretty great session. One point that was brought up was the fact that Citrix's monitoring product Director just isn't very good. Personally, I have to agree. It's not the best product out there for monitoring a Citrix environment. Director doesn't hold a candle to competing products such as those from Goliath TechnologiesEG InnovationsLiquidware StratusphereExtraHopControlUp and likely others! I will get into each of these at some point on this blog post. Some of these products are very different than others so it's definitely a worthy topic for further discussion.

Citrix UPM Profiles to FSLogix Profiles Conversion Powershell Script

Posted by David Ott on Oct 25, 2017 12:50:09 PM

I moved from UPM to FSLogix earlier this year, and decided to write my own powershell script to convert the UPM profiles to .vhd.  FSLogix has its own conversion process (which I didn’t find a whole lot of info on), but I decided to create my own.

Project: Simplified Thin Client Management

Posted by Rory Monaghan on Sep 26, 2017 12:32:03 PM

Over the years I have worked with many different makes and models of thin clients. In previous years, the management software of most thin clients left a lot to be desired, particularly from the hardware manufacturers with the largest presence in enterprise IT, I’ll let you guess which those are 🙂 When Douglas Brown joined IGEL Technologies, it piqued my interest. When I saw IGEL were giving away a Tesla at VMworld 2017, it piqued my interest even more! I played around with the IGEL Universal Management Suite with a virtual instance of their UDC3 product (Universal Desktop Converter which you can use to deploy the lightweight IGEL OS to physical hardware. This is great for repurposing outdated hardware). With this I tried the typical use cases for a thin client. I tested with my published applications and virtual desktops. No big surprises there! Everything worked as expected.

Technical Review: Deep Citrix Monitoring and Troubleshooting with Goliath

Posted by Rory Monaghan on Jun 20, 2017 11:56:43 AM

Recently I published a blog post titled: Citrix is Slow, Or is it Really? In that article I briefly mentioned using a product such as Goliath Performance Monitor. If you have XenApp or XenDesktop 7.x in your environment, you may rely on Citrix Director for monitoring and troubleshooting. If so, I’m sorry for you. It has been my experience that Director can miss quite a lot. At least in version 7.9 and earlier, which is what I have used the most. If I could put a value on the time I have spent over the last 6 months alone troubleshooting slowness issues which Director couldn’t help with, it would likely pay for a good monitoring product such as this two times over!

Base Image Script Framework (BIS-F) – Version 6.0.0

Posted by Matthias Schlimm on Apr 19, 2017 2:17:37 PM

the perfect way to seal your Base Image

Every time you build you’re base Image from scratch or update it, you must seal it before deploying it to your cloned devices. No matter if you are using Citrix XenApp/XenDesktop with Machine Creation Services (MCS) or Provisioning Services (PVS), VMware View or Microsoft only, BIS-F supports it all. Optimize your base Image before deployment, delete unique identifiers to prevent duplicate/ghost entries on your management server (Anti-Virus, SCCM, SCOM, etc.…), delete junk files, defrag your disk etc. All these necessary steps and much more has to be run manually, but here is a better way. Here’s the right tool for the job.

Context awareness is important for your business!

Posted by Sascha Goeckel on Nov 7, 2016 2:31:27 PM

Let’s make one thing clear; context awareness is one of the most important topics in the IT landscape today. Without context awareness, IT departments cannot fulfill the requirements of their customers (means users) and the security and compliance requirements of their business. Not considering this fact may result in a disadvantage over the competition and in worst case it costs the business money.
