FSLogix Containers – Search Index Considerations and Troubleshooting

Windows Search is a feature that has existed in the Windows OS since Windows Vista, although it did exist as freeware called Windows Desktop Search for XP and Server 2003. It replaced the Indexing Service that first arrived as part of the Windows NT4 Option Pack, which was deprecated in Windows 7 and finally removed in Windows 8.

Windows Search builds a full-text index of files on a device. The time required for the initial creation of this index depends on the amount and type of data to be indexed and can take up to several hours. In persistent environments, this does not present a problem, as the creation of the index is a one-time event. However, in non-persistent RDSH or VDI environments like XenApp and XenDesktop, this can present an issue.

Use OneDrive Client on RDSH or XenApp with FSLogix and PowerShell (IWC/ROW Building Block included)

Posted by Chris Twiest on Jun 19, 2018 11:25:43 AM

You might notice there is no OneDrive client in Windows Server 2016. After installing Office ProPlus, you do get the OneDrive for Business client but that client isn’t as feature rich as the normal OneDrive client. But luckily we can download the normal OneDrive client from Microsoft website here. Now we run into the next problem; the OneDrive client will install itself into the user profile and not like any normal program into “C:\Program Files”. So, to use the OneDrive Client on Windows Server 2016 we need to solve a few problems first:

  • Install OneDrive for every user who signs into the system once.
  • Check if the installation is already present and start up the client.
  • Capture the installation of OneDrive and add the files in OneDrive to the profile.
  • Stop asking for password to the user every time they sign in.
  • Integration with Windows Explorer.
  • Choose what to sync to the system from OneDrive if needed.

How to manage device-based licensing on XenApp and RDSH using FSLogix Apps

Posted by Brandon Lee on Feb 20, 2018 11:37:58 AM

James Rankin and Kevin Howell, of HTGUK, recently published an article discussing the problems with per-device licensing on XenApp and RDSH and how to properly manage those issues with FSLogix App Masking. Using per-device licensed software on XenApp or RDSH servers can be a murky, annoying, costly pain. So how do we manage it without all these issues?

Gabe Knuth: Why I joined FSLogix

Posted by Gabe Knuth on Feb 1, 2018 9:09:03 AM

Sometimes life gives you an opportunity that you can't pass up, and I've been fortunate to have a few of those occasions in my career. The first was a random encounter with Brian Madden when we both worked at a reseller in Cleveland, OH, who said he was off to do a proof of concept for this thing called "MetaFrame" and asked if I wanted to come along. I'd been a desktop support engineer for a year or so, but had just been promoted to "server guy" after getting my CNA (it was the 90's!). I'd only been in the new role for a week or two when I learned about MetaFrame, but that one proof of concept shaped my entire career, and I was immediately pulled back towards desktops.

App-V Decision Matrix v7

Posted by Rory Monaghan on Oct 9, 2017 1:42:05 PM

I re-thought the matrix to get it outside of the scope of just App-V but it’s still called the App-V Decision Matrix for a few reasons. I still love App-V and now App-V is now in box in Windows 10 Enterprise and Server 2016. More organizations have access to App-V than ever before. The App-V Sequencer is available as part of the Windows 10 ADK. It is for these reasons, I decided to keep this as the App-V Decision Matrix. I am using App-V as my baseline i.e. My app is X type of app and contains y can I deliver it with App-V? If not, what is a suitable alternative?

Benny Tritsch: Why I became an investor and team member of FSLogix

Posted by Benny Tritsch on Jul 5, 2017 8:15:31 AM

Here's my little story of becoming an FSLogix investor earlier this year. Many of you may know me as a subject matter expert in Windows desktop remoting and enterprise application delivery. The Frankfurt Rhine/Main area is my home base, with the largest German cloud datacenters almost in my backyard. I enjoy sharing my knowledge through books, blog articles and presentations at industry events. As a result, Microsoft, Citrix, VMware and NVIDIA have recognized me as a member of their respective technical community award programs. Since launching my first technology startup when I was a university student, I've always been watching the international startup ecosystem very carefully. After eight years as a full-time researcher at the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics, I've had the opportunity to be in leading positions at several international startups over the last 15 years, including my own. I've learned that equity investments, where the funders get a piece of the company, are a great way of directly participating in startups at an early stage. And this is exactly where FSLogix comes into the picture.

Office 365 - How Difficult it is to Make it Look This Easy

Posted by Kevin Goodman on Aug 16, 2016 9:51:27 AM

“You don’t know how difficult it is to make it look this easy.”

We’ve been very pleased with the response to our Office 365 containers. Office 365 is Microsoft’s fastest growing product ever. Office 365 is on a $4.4B run-rate and 70% of Fortune 500 companies have purchased Office 365 in the last 12 months (source:Microsoft).

But, did you know that without FSLogix, the Office 365 suite doesn’t roam correctly in XenApp and XenDesktop non-persistent? You read that right: By default, Outlook and OneDrive for Business do not roam correctly. OneDrive for Business is not supported in RDSH / XenApp environments and Outlook if it is in Cached Exchange Mode has issues in both RDSH / XenApp and non-persistent XenDesktop. (Check out this MS-Ignite session discussing this issue and recommending FSLogix)

Are Some XenApp Best Practices Still True?

Posted by Brandon Lee on Jun 16, 2016 9:55:11 AM

A headline for a blogspot, on Citrix blogs about XenApp best practices reads, "XenApp Best Practices #1: For the best user experience, application and backend data must reside together on a fast, low latency network."

How do we achieve this best practice when all of our apps and backend data are potentially distributed all over the globe?

Marius Sandbu, Citrix CTA, Azure MVP, vExpert suggests a compromise to achieve the best user experience.

Why?

"Because that should be our end goalDeliver the best user experience." -Marius Sandbu

PQR UEM Comparison White Paper Excerpt

Posted by Brandon Lee on Jun 15, 2016 11:45:02 AM

The PQR team released their latest User Environment Management (UEM) comparison white paper v16.03, formerly known as the UEM Smackdown.

"...I got questions from people not familiar with the smackdown what it is, the name is not something native English people would use. In English a comparison white paper with a winner is a bake-off. This white paper doesn’t bring out a winner so a bake-off was the wrong word as well. The white paper compares User Environment Management solutions to each other and therefore it is a comparisons white paper." -Rob Beekmans

Below is an excerpt from that white paper, courtesy of Rob Beekman and the PQR team. Updated May 25 2016.

Posted by Freek Berson on May 23, 2016 3:39:05 PM

I’ve written about FSLogix in the past. About a year ago I wrote an article on masking specific applications & plugins for specific users and running various java versions on the same OS. Check it out here: Managing your Azure RemoteApp application landscape using FSLogix Apps.

FSLogix is a set of tools with an extremely small footprint and has an amazing set of features that fix really specific problems, applicable in almost any VDI or RDSH environment!
