I’m Converted: How I Convert Packages from App-V 4.x to 5.1

Posted by Tim Mangan on Nov 30, 2015 6:02:30 PM

This has to rank among the top posts that I never thought I would write in my entire life.  I mean, it is right up there with “Why I’ll never play golf again”.  If we had subtitles, the subtitle of this article would be “ The 5.1 Converter Doesn’t Suck “.  High praise indeed!

Abstract

This post details out how to organize an efficient conversion project to move packages from Microsoft App-V 4.x to 5.x.  The example project uses App-V 5.1 and the free AppV_Manage tool (5.1.3) to efficiently manage the process.

Free Tool: Automate Creation of FSLogix Rules for Your AppV Packages

Posted by Duncan Murdoch on Sep 8, 2015 6:15:02 PM

If you have read the previous articles on creating a minimal infrastructure App-V environment (Here) then you will have seen that you can use FsLogix Apps to manage the availability of globally published App-V applications. The only slightly sticky point is creating the FsLogix .fxr rules for each App-V package. Whilst the steps aren't overly time consuming (see here for an overview) they do require a manual set of steps to create a rule for each application. If you have 50 App-V applications this might take the better part of a day importing the app into the cache, creating a new rule, browsing for the App-V Package Root Path etc. If the app needs to be run through the sequencer again then the PackageID and VersionID are going to change meaning recreating the .fxr. The goal of this tools is to reduce the time, effort and increase the accuracy when creating rules for FsLogix. (At least until the FsLogix guys implement a CLI/API to play with ;-) ;-) ).

TheGlobalizer: Automatically making user targeted AppV work as Global

A treat for you today. You see, today is my day to find out if I am re-awarded as a Microsoft MVP. You get a little nervous waiting for Redmond to wake up and send the email each time. So with a surprise today I find that I am no longer an App-V MVP. Now I’m a “Windows IT Pro” MVP, a category combining move. Whatever; it is my third MVP category over the years (RDS was the other). So in honor of my new recognition, today I have a new technique that IT Pros can use with App-V.

My Sequencer Build Script

Posted by Tim Mangan on May 1, 2015 10:03:03 AM

I build a LOT of App-V Sequencer and Client VMs over the course of a year. Not only do I test each release, but hotfixes and a bunch of private builds that I get, and then I also need to handle changes to my own tools (which need testing before release). Plus I want to reuse the technique to build VMs for all of those training classes. So it should be no surprise that I automate that process as much as I can.

Coming Soon: Generate Package Documentation with AppV_Manage

Posted by Tim Mangan on Apr 23, 2015 11:35:45 AM

Coming Soon! In version 4.0 of AppV_Manage, we will have an optional (paid for) feature to generate package documentation in Microsoft Word format.  This work is an outgrowth of the package analyzer function.  In version 4 I have enhanced the analysis, going beyond reporting on extensions reported by App-V but also analyzing the package contents to see some of what the packager didn’t notice.

Apps Needing PVAD

Posted by Tim Mangan on Apr 13, 2015 9:10:10 PM

Since App-V 5.0 SP3, the default situation is that apps are installed into the VFS.  This solves a lot of integration issues, especially involving Configuration Groups, but it is not perfect for every app.
