Getting Started with Sequencing

Posted by Tim Mangan on Aug 23, 2016 8:53:42 AM

NOTE: This post is part of a series. You might want to start at the beginning:

  1. “I’m new to App-V so how do I get started?”
  2. What is App-V and how does it work?
  3. How do I get App-V?
  4. Getting Started with Sequencing (This post)
  5. To Manage or not to Manage

What to Sequencing On

The App-V Sequencer is used on very clean OS images. The less that is on the image the better. I prefer just the OS and Service packs. Hotfixes are usually OK, but don’t usually matter given how you use this OS. We usually sequence on a virtual machine that we can create a snapshot/checkpoint, allowing us to revert back to a known state before sequencing an app. Here is a blog post I previously wrote documenting my lab sequencer build.

I’m Converted: How I Convert Packages from App-V 4.x to 5.1

Posted by Tim Mangan on Nov 30, 2015 6:02:30 PM

This has to rank among the top posts that I never thought I would write in my entire life.  I mean, it is right up there with “Why I’ll never play golf again”.  If we had subtitles, the subtitle of this article would be “ The 5.1 Converter Doesn’t Suck “.  High praise indeed!

Abstract

This post details out how to organize an efficient conversion project to move packages from Microsoft App-V 4.x to 5.x.  The example project uses App-V 5.1 and the free AppV_Manage tool (5.1.3) to efficiently manage the process.

Putting your App-V Scripts directly into the .AppV 5.1 file

Posted by Tim Mangan on Oct 10, 2015 10:28:00 PM

Using Scripts to aid the deployment of App-V packages makes the virtual applications more flexible and deployable in production.  Prior to the App-V 5.1 release, this was done by manually editing the external Deployment and/or User Configuration.xml files.  Not only was the editing originally a clunky process (leading to the development of a free editor toolACE to edit those files), but we found that dealing with these external files was cumbersome.  If you used the App-V Management Server or Stand-alone models to deploy your packages, you could easily forget to use the external files. And if you used Config Manager instead to deploy the files were automatically applied, but, it was possible to forget that only editing the Deployment config meant that the UserConfig file might override the change.

Adobe Acrobat Reader DC and App-V

Posted by Tim Mangan on Aug 19, 2015 11:22:00 PM

Just where the heck isStealthPuppy when you need him? Somebody has to talk about Adobe Acrobat Reader DC and App-V. At times it has been hard to sequence Adobe Reader, but these days you can almost do it while sleeping.  OK, so I’ll take a shot at writing about it because old posts make it sound so hard.

First off, let’s be clear that I am talking about the free product, not the Pro version. And my buddy Nicke Kallen wrote about the full Adobe Acrobat XI version recently here, so maybe he’ll tackle the DC Pro version next.

My Sequencer Build Script

Posted by Tim Mangan on May 1, 2015 10:03:03 AM

I build a LOT of App-V Sequencer and Client VMs over the course of a year. Not only do I test each release, but hotfixes and a bunch of private builds that I get, and then I also need to handle changes to my own tools (which need testing before release). Plus I want to reuse the technique to build VMs for all of those training classes. So it should be no surprise that I automate that process as much as I can.

Sequencing AutoCAD 2015 Update

Posted by Tim Mangan on Apr 28, 2015 2:34:43 PM

Last June, I posted a way to sequence AutoCAD 2015 using App-V 5 on a  Blog post here. This was done using the then latest-and-greatest version of App-V, 5.0 SP2 with Hotfix 4.  We had been having trouble with many AutoCAD versions since the 2014 versions started appearing with some sort of incompatibility, and Hotfix 4 overcame whatever that was.
